What is ISO 9000

ISO 9000 is a family of standards for quality management systems maintained by ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and administered by accreditation and certification bodies.

What is ISO 9001:2000

The ISO 9001:2000 quality management system is a formal statement from management closely linking the business and marketing plan and to customer needs.

Decisions about the quality management system are made based on recorded data and the system is regularly audited and evaluated for conformance and effectiveness.

The quality management system is understood and followed at all levels and by all employees, with each employee having measurable objectives to work towards.

For a manufacturer, the requirements in ISO 9001 would include:

- A set of procedures that cover all key processes in the business;
- Monitoring processes which ensure the production of a quality product;
- The keeping of proper records;
- Checking outgoing product for defects, with appropriate corrective action where necessary;
- Regularly reviewing individual processes and the quality system itself for effectiveness.
