• Main civil and building works for the construction of the 765kV yard at MERCURY SUB-STATION
In August 2008 Tyris Construction was contracted by Eskom to complete the bulk earthworks terrace for 765kV yard at Mercury Substation, situated close to the town of Orkney. In laymen’s terms the total square meter of the terrace establishment is equal to the size of 35 rugby fields, and was completed in December 2008. Tyris Construction was subsequently awarded the contract in January 2009, to complete the main civil and building works for the 765kV yard at Mercury Substation. The project forms part of Eskom’s strategic plan, aimed at strengthening the power supply to the Cape corridor. At completion, set for end of September 2009, 622 tons of reinforcement steel would have been placed, 7000m3 concrete would have been cast, 729 tons of structural would have been erected, 175,000m2 yard stone would have spread and 59km (10mm diameter) copper would have been installed.
